Blog Response #8
**Do not do this blog until you have completed novel #2.
Upon completion of reading your novel, what have you learned about a different culture? What shocked you? What seemed strange to you? What couldn't you believe? Take time to give specific examples from your novel that share what you learned about history and a different culture. Share your feelings about what you read.
after reading i am Malala i have learned many thinks about her culture, for example its not easy for them to live in great houses, schooling is also very different, what shocked me was that girls were not able to attend school, unless they were 10 years old or younger, which is why Malala and her friend had to pretend they were younger than they actually were, it also shocked me that the Taliban would beat innocent people on the street in front of everyone, it seemed strange to me that the Taliban couldn't get in trouble for doing such awful things to innocent people, and then something i couldn't believe and still cannot believe is that Malala survived getting shot, i find that crazy.
ReplyDeletei also think reading this book was kind off a culture shock, and its crazy to see children have to live like that
Deletewhy isn't it easy for them to live in great houses? Could they not afford schooling? and girls couldn't go to school unless they were 10 years old or younger, is that the same with boy as well?
DeleteThat is interesting, her culture sounds opposite to what it is like for us. I am also shocked that she survived that, crazy!

ReplyDeleteWhile reading the book Night I learned a lot about the extent of the treatment they endured. I always knew of the holocaust because it was a major part of history but I never realized how awful it really was. I couldn't believe that humans treated other humans that way. I was completely shocked just how they could beat, starve, and kill the Jews and see nothing wrong with it. Their life prior to the camps was normal, the kids played and families had similar dynamic to what they would now. It was so odd how quickly their lives changed; from sleeping in their own bed in their families house ended with them in a concentration camp.
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds really good, and it was always a part of history which made me want to read it as well. For my next book i will probably be interested because of all of these blogs make the book sound good.
Deletei also learned alot about hows jews where treated by reading this book it mad it alot easier to read because it was pretty interesting to learn about how bad the germans truly where to the jews
DeleteI also read Night and it upset me on how the jews where treated in the book
DeleteI read I Am Malala, I have learned a lot about Malala’s coulter, how it has both good and bad sides. What shocked me was just how differently girls are treated verses boys; I knew to an extent that it was a thing that happened, but I didn’t think that grown adult men would go as far as bombing and shooting school just because their girls’ schools. The thing that I really couldn’t believe when I read it was that there was a woman being proud that her kids were suicide bombers. At times it was difficult to read about the horrible things that would be done to the people around Malala, but it was also just purely shocking that there was so much going on that we never knew about.
ReplyDeletei also think it was so hard to learn how people were treated in pakastain compared to here in the united states
Deletei learned a lot reading night and how the Jews were treated bad in the camps and quit focusing on their religion to just live. what surprised me was how cruel the Germans actually were. what seemed strange to me was that the Germans didn't care for the Jews at all. I couldn't believe that they used babies as targets. i learned that in the concentration camps, it was everyone for themselves. i liked the book but it was a fast-paced book.
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds really interesting, and it makes me want to read it to understand the book and understand history a little bit better. Hope you liked the book, seems like you did.
DeleteThat's crazy that they used babies as targets. It sounds like an interesting book to read for anyone wanting to learn about the Holocaust.
Deleteim also surprised how the germans where so bad for no reason i cant believe some of the things the jews did and thought it was funny and didnt care
DeleteI also read night and I couldn't not believe how they threw the kids in the air and shot the either. its a terrible thing that happened and I don't know how they didn't feel guilty while doing these things.
Deletei think it is absurd on how bad the Jewish people were treated by the nazis. its insane to think that people could be treated that bad just for believing in a different religion then others do. i do not think it is fair to do that.
Deletei agree with what you said its just crazy that the Germans treated the jews so harshly like they are people too.
DeleteAfter reading A Long Way Gone, I learned about the significance of music and dancing in celebrations, which served as expressions of joy among people. What shocked me was the impact of the war. At the end of the book, Ishmael did not want to go back into the war and wanted nothing to do with it. Something that seemed strange to me was the end when the rebels took over regions of the government and killed many. In the attack on Mattru Jong, he vividly describes chaos and terror as the rebels attack his village forcing him to run. Witnessing friends get killed in the war while fighting off many. Ishmael participated in attacks and raids in the war at such young age.
ReplyDeletewow at such a young age fighting wars sounds terrifying. I would be scared of being in a rebel army then to turn away from all of it sounds like a brave thing to do
DeleteI read "I Am Malala," and I was also shocked of the impact of war in my novel. I had an attack on my character as well. My character couldn't escape her attack though, and got shot in her head at only the young age of 15. Do you think your book would be different if the rebels didn't over the government. would there have been less war? Our books sound similar with all the war and fighting happening.
Deleteits so cool that these cultures are very diffrent from ours like how we dont do dancing as part of our culture but for them its totally normal. its also crazy that you are allowed to go to war at such a young age. if it were america you are not allowed to go until you are 18 years old but for them he is probably less then that.
Deletei agree about how the music played a big role with him, its such a small detail but after reading the book you realize that the music was basically Ishmaels way of coping and getting the gruesome stuff out of his head
DeleteAfter reading Night I learned a lot about how the Jews were treated at first. In Elie's case they were treated very kindly until it took a turn for the worst. What shocked me is that even while in the camps they still wanted to participate in the Jewish holidays even while they were barley surviving. I knew the Nazi party was very harsh but that exceeded my expectations. I was really confused as to why when Elie was freed why didn't he want some sort of redemption. I would have still felt angry and upset by what they did. Also I didn't know that the Jews would black mail each other to get what they want to go so far as to let their own die. I feel if they would have teamed up they could've gotten farther.
ReplyDeleteI also was taken aback by the harshness of the Nazi party. I knew that they were abusive killers but never to that extent.
DeleteI agree, while reading I also wondered the same. I would of held a grudge towards everyone who did awful things to me. I got a vibe of "every man for themselves" towards the end of the book when survival was so difficult.
DeleteThem wanting to participate in the Jewish conditions also shocked me, along with the way the Nazis treatment.
Deletei read I Am Malala and there was also a turn for the worst and it seemed so sudden. There was bombings from the Taliban both by bombs and suicide bombers
DeleteReading Malala made me have many wonders. I learned that they have a strange government unlike a normal government like we have. They have to wear special clothes, follow certain marriage rules, and they are expected to believe what everyone else believes. It shocked me that a government would try to control the rights of the people and make them all do as the government says. It was strange to me that everywhere they go, they are risking their life; like when Malala was too scare to walk to school so she started riding the bus and when her parent were scared to be at the hospital because they could get killed. I couldn't believe that the person who shot Malala wasn't caught. I learned that not to long ago this world was a mess and no where was safe especially in Pakistan.
ReplyDeleteThe rules that Pakistan has also seemed strange to me, and I think we are lucky to have the freedoms that we do have. I think it was crazy that Malala was shot just because she was advocating for women's rights. It seems more strange to us because women's rights are just a natural freedom we have here. The book opened my eyes to how different cultures in our society are.
DeleteKind of sounds like my book night where the German soldiers take control over the Jews and make them scared for whatever they do they either get killed or beat.
DeleteI am reading I Am Malala, this book made me realize that a lot of people don't have it as good as us in the United States. For example women are looked at to be house wife's and have children and often do not get education. I cant imagine not going to school at any point like most girls in swat. I also think that there government needs help and that swat would be a successful and safe country again. Malala would feel unsafe just walking to school, i would hate not being able to leave my house not feeling safe.
ReplyDeletewhy would she feel unsafe walking to school? did something happen before, or what caused her to be scared to leave her house?
DeleteI am reading The Kite Runner, and i have learned that they have goofy names and their all hard to pronounce. The thing that shocked me was the ending how Amir ended up in the hospital, and how Sohrabs asked if he wanted him to fly his kite for him. something that seems strange to me was when Amir called Soraya after 15 years of marriage he finally told her about Hassan rape. Like why did he wait 15 years to explain it. i couldn't believe that Amir opened the bathroom door and began to scream and then n ambulance took him and sohrab to the hospital.
ReplyDeletei agree that its a vary diffrent with everything
DeleteI am reading Night, and this book made me realize how evil people can be and have no remorse for human life. For instance, there were multiple occasions where Jews were lined up to see how healthy they looked and they called it the selection for those who didn't pass were sent off to the furnace. These selections occurred frequently throughout the book being the end of many Jewish lives. It was hard to believe the Germans could have so much hate for people who had done nothing to them and not even tried to resist either.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading Malala. I can somewhat relate your book to mine. The Germans and Taliban can be somewhat similar, both trying to kill incent people. Obviously the Holocaust was way more horrific than Malala getting shot.
DeleteI agree with yours because in Malala it is very similar with how they were both trying to harm the innocent people and nothing was done about it.
DeleteI read the book "I am Malala." Something that I learned about different cultures is that they value things that seem small to people from our cultures. They value their education, even though the Taliban tried to ban it, Ziauddin, Malala's father ran a school for girls. They also have different outlooks on gender roles giving women less freedoms, and religion also plays a huge influence in their lives in their culture. Something that shocked me is the Taliban and how brutal their enforcement was. Something that seemed strange to me was how mistreated women were, like their dress codes and how they were punished for certain things. Something that I couldn't believe was the attack on Malala herself. She was only 15 years old and shot in the head just because she spoke out about girls education. Not only her attack, but how blessed she was to be able to survive the attack. My perspective on life after I read this book has changed, and I realized how lucky we are in the United States to have the freedoms and laws that we have. I gained deeper knowledge and understanding of the Pakistani culture, and the challenges people use to face living there.
ReplyDeletesame in a long way gone they showed how much music playes in the countries culture and how they sing and dance to it and how they judged ishmeal by the music he had
DeleteI read the same book and i couldn't believe how different their culture was from ours. I found it crazy with how different girls were treated from boys, that was the biggest culture shock to me.
Deletei read the book night i was surprised how good the records where that the germans kept but they didnt care about the jews one bit and how they where killing them as fast as they where but every number was kept and they knew dates when they where killed sick and every thing that happened to them i feel it wasnt very fair how the jews where treated and lied to when they did nothing wrong or to hurt the germans hitler just wanted to kill them all for no real reason
ReplyDeleteyes i agree the the way they kept track of who they killed, who died, and who was still living.
DeleteAfter reading the book Night you really learn and can picture all the horrible things that the Jews went through that you didn't really know what they all been through. you heard about stuff but never really knew all the details. After reading this you really understand how bad these guys were treated and you wonder how people can treat other humans that bad. I was shocked how they can just beat them when they do the little things wrong and make them starve to death like how to the solders watch that and not feel like there doing something wrong they were just normal people like the rest of us and there lives changed so fast.
ReplyDeleteI agree the Jews were treated very badly during the holocaust.
Deletei am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, some things i have learned about the afghani culture is the way the women are forced to dress and them getting married at 15 to 45 year old's is normalized which was very surprising to me how that is socially accepted, first Mariam marries Rasheed at 15 while he was 45 and then 15 years after that Rasheed married Laila who is 14
ReplyDeletehow is that even allowed, i wonder if they have rights in anything political
Deletei agree with you becouse in a long way gone they had kid hyped up on druges and killing people.and they were 9-10.
Deletethe way how they can get married so young is very surprising and also messed up.
Deletedo the girls have no rights at all?
Deleteits truly terrible, and something that needs to be stopped however possible
Deletei read I Am Malala where they kind of do the same but i learned that after 14 they can get married and are considered an adult, girls are also expected to stop going to school at 10 if they go at all
DeleteAfter reading Night some things i have learned about the jews is that they were neglected beyond imaginable length. The jews were forced to leave there homes into ghettos and further into camps. so many were killed and every single family was split up. Brothers and sisters saw each other for the last time and never even knew it. The Germans did not care about age. everyone want and even sometimes the babies were used as target practice.
ReplyDeleteits scary how the viewed other people as beings other than human thinking it justifies them to take them away and kill them
Deleteits wrong how they worked them to death just to kill them
Deletei agree its crazy how they just used them as work horses and then killed them.
Deleteim reading a Thousand Splendid Suns. this book made me realize how cut off other countries are from the things we enjoy on the daily in America. entertainment, hobbies, and even lifestyle. women are looked at like tools and have no rights, marriage is during teen years. 40 year old men with 14 year old girls. it shows you how wrong people can be. throughout the book Marium and Laila were abused, raped, and assualted for disobeying orders from there husbands. This is a different
ReplyDeletetheir culture and whats socially accepted is so different from ours its other worldly
Deletei am reading the same book as you and it is messed up how they live there.
DeleteAfter reading the book Night, I learned about the jews and how poorly they were treated. They were taken from there home and put to concentration camps where many were killed and the other got put through hard work in unlivable conditions. I was shocked at how the Nazis treated and killed the Jews when they literally treated a baby as target practice. it was also very strangle to me how the jew were willing to kill one of their own over a piece of bread.
DeleteI am reading a long way gone this made me relize how much more differnt culture we have. america threatens cilvil wars about gun laws or slaves but the fact that a civle war started becouse some kids wanted to take over the country and rebel and there was no one to stop them baffles me. what seems strange to me is the fact that kids are willing to kill just to rebel against the country. what i couldn't believe was the fact that Ishmael went from singing and dancing and being seemingly innocent then started making games of how fast they can slit peoples throats. Ilearnd they dont think any thing about smoking weed.
ReplyDeleteyour book relates to mine thousand splendid sons ther was lots of wars and killing
Deletei just finished reading a thousand splendid suns. My book took place in Afghanistan and it surprised me of how different the culture is there. The culture is a culture that we here thinks is messed up witch it is like how a 50 year old man can marry a 15 year old girl and how they can be married to as many wives as they what to be married to. also how the guy go to school and get a education and how the girls go and learn just how to be a house wife and how the guy can marry a girl as so as they are able to have a kid. so a 15 year old girl can get pregnant in their culture. i also could not believe that there are tsarist left and right in there town and how if they see a girl on the street how they beat them up for no reason. I think it is not a good place to live at or evening go to it is so messed up there.
ReplyDeleteyour book sounds vary good it is defiantly different that they can have as many wife's as they want.
DeleteMy book, a long way gone, makes story telling a big thing in their culture.
DeleteAfter reading Night by Elie Wiesel, I have learned that the Jewish people take their traditions and religion very seriously. For example, when it was Yom Kippur everyone debated on whether to fast or not when they were being starved or when they started to say a prayer for the dead for themselves because no one could say it for them after they were killed. It was shocking that they were that dedicated to their faith that they would not eat the little food they got. I could not believe that the Nazis were capable of doing such terrible acts. At the beginning of the book they were throwing babies in a fire at the concentration camp.
ReplyDeletei agree the jewish really take alot of pride in there religion.
Deleteafter reading night i learned a lot about how poorly the Jews were treated. what surprised me the most was how the Germans could treat people this way, making them go days without food or water. it was shocking to see how they kept records of everyone who they killed even though they did not care for them
ReplyDeletethis book sounds vary interesting and they fact that the jews got treated that poorly is terrible.
Deleteafter reading my book along way gone I was shocked when i found out that they were fighting in the war against the rebels in there younger teen years. I thought it was a little strange how much they liked dancing so much he decided to leave the war and not care about it. but to move to new York to keep on with his dancing I also could not be leave all the things he went throe like loosing all of his friends then finding more and loosing his family.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is very strange that dancing is such a big part of his culture
DeleteAfter reading A long way gone I noticed that there was a lot of strange things within Ishmaels culture. For example story telling is huge, he would look forward to campfires where the elders would tell stories, and also most families had story time most nights. Also, the people are a lot more willing to interact with strangers, they would dance together on public transportation and almost every family would take in somebody who is sick or lost or just needs help. However, that part stopped when the war came.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the book Night it really hit me how jews were treated in the concetration camps how they werent even human beings they were just numbers and workers. It amazed me how they tortured the people and they didnt care what they did to them and the only reason they were being tortured is because they were jews. The concentration camps wouldnt have even ended if it wasnt for the war coming to an end its just crazy to me how many people were killed.
ReplyDeleteI read Night also and it is so crazy how the jews were treated like numbers and not like a human
Deletei read a thousand splendid suns and in this book the culture is Pakistani and its very diffrent from the american culture. one key example of this is that in Pakistani culture you can have multiple wives. in the book a man named Rasheed married both the main characters Marium and Laila. another shocking thing about there culture was that the women there are treated very poorly. Women are treated like objects they are just used to make food and babies. and if women go outside on there own then they get beat up by men on the street. i couldn't believe that women were treated this way and how poorly men treated their wives.
ReplyDeletei agree the it is weird to marry multiple women.
Deletehaving mutiple wives just seems wrong to me
Deletedid you enjoy reading the book would recomend others to read it also
Deletei read thousand splendid sons. the culture hit me. there are women getting married at 15 years old. and it doesn't matter how old the guy is they can marry a 15 year old. guys can marry more than one women. this book rilly displays how the culture is in Afghanistan. the country changed a lot in the book and the country was ruled by the Taliban.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the book Night, I learned about the jews and how poorly they were treated.
ReplyDeletei wonder if the nazis knew that they were terrible?
DeleteAfter finishing the book I am Malala I found many things about their culture that is very different from mine. Many things about the way they lived were a big shock to me like the houses they lived in, the way school was, and how girls couldn't attend school. I also found it crazy that the Taliban's did so many awful things to people and nothing was really done about it and that Malala got shot and things still continued to happen.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why girls could not attend school. This book sounds like it was very different from our culture over here.
DeleteAfter finishing the book A long way gone, I noticed how surprising the culture is so different from ours in the USA. what shocked me is how the people walked from one town to the next in order to be able to go to school instead of using some sort of transportation,
ReplyDeletegood public transport is necessary for modern life
DeleteAfter reading the book Night, I learned the the jews were very nice people because after what they have been through the holocaust the Jews didn't want any revenge to the Nazis. I couldn't believe that the jews didn't want any revenge back at the Nazis after all the stuff they have been through. Like when they hung multiple people Infront off every one and they got beat and mistreated for years. I feel it was wrong for the Nazis to put the jews through all that.
ReplyDeletei also could belive that the jews didnt do anythiing back in revenge
Deletei read thousand splendid suns and the culture in that book is very different to the united states. girls being married off at a young age, being abused, and ultimately being viewed as lesser is a lot more different than the united states
ReplyDeletewere you suprised by how difftent the cultuer was i know im readsing the kite runner and i was suprised by it
DeleteI had A long way gone and that surprised me because people walked from town to town.
DeleteI was surprised how everyone treated Malala after trying to help the women have the right to get education.
Deleteim reading the kite runner and its vary difrent from here they still had lower class people takeing care of there houses and people could get away with alot more with law and stuff like that. its also the more money you had the higher up u were and the nicer the house was and if u had alot of money you were not suposted to talk to lower class people
ReplyDeleteThat makes me mad that if your lower class your not supposed to talk to the higher class. Why can't everyone talk to who every the want to.
DeleteAfter reading The Kite Runner I learned a lot about the different cultures. I could not believe they way the if you were born into a higher class you had to meet the standards of that class and if you were lower class you could never become high class or be seen with someone of a higher class. I also cant believe the way the different cultures treat people differently. They treat some of those kids over there so horribly it makes me mad. Also people over there get away with alot more stuff then we would get away with over here.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading I am Malala, I have learned how her culture is very strict and that they don't have the freedom we do in the United States. I couldn't believe that that the women were expected to stay at their house and clean and cook and take care of their kids so the men can work.
ReplyDeleteI read the book night and it shocked me how people could treat others like that it just crazy to see how monstorist people can be, it also suprised me that theyd use babys for target practice
ReplyDeleteyes i agree its crazy what a person will do to another.
Deletei read the book along way gone and nothing cracy suprised me but somethings that stood out to me was just the type of houses an communitys they lived in, they lived in villages and they had multiple miles between every town and most of the time they didnt have great ways to get there like we do. another thing that stood out to me was how music played a part in these young boys childhoods they loved alot of American music. another thing that was crazy to me is that i didn't even know that this war happened their even if it was in the past i never heard about it.
ReplyDeleteseems like a very interesting story
Deletei am reading a thousand splendid suns and i loved it but the begging is so hard to read because it isn't very interesting, and it is over all hard to comprehend. the second half was amazing i get see into their culture and situation so i understand a little bit more now what it was like to live over there in that time period.
ReplyDeleteI am reading the book Prisoner B 3087 and i choose this book because its about the holocaust and the concetration camps and i am into those type of books alot and i really enjoy hearing so many different stories that people had going through the camps and how they barely made it out alive and how they were able to survive.
ReplyDelete
