Imagery is key to capturing the reader's imagination and taking him/her on the adventure within the book.  All 4 authors use several different techniques to paint a picture in your mind of the scenes within the plot of the book.  Share two or three images that have been captured in your mind through the author's word choice.  Why are these images so vivid, and how did the author manage to accomplish this task?  Be sure to include  specific details  of what you envisioned through the author's words.

  1. i see mostly old and raggedy homes in the cities mentioned throughout the book, and then the decent homes that the rich live in. i also see packed streets with street markets and women and men wearing hoods and balaclavas and overall different clothes. as well as the look of the characters in age. Jalil, Rasheed, and Mariam. They are described well in the book

    1. i am reading a long way gone and it is kind of similar because Ishmael has to stay in villages that aren't so nice, some in bad shape or just completely destroyed, and also throughout the book most people had to scavenge for everything so most of the time Ishmael the main character had clothes that didn't even fit him and everyone had different types of clothes that they could find.

    3. I agree, I read the book night and I could imagine the concentration camps with very poor living conditions, similar to the cities in your book.

  2. In the book Night the author does a really good job at sharing scenes in the book that you can picture from the horrible beating that the Jews got and the different camps you could really picture which camps were better than others. He did a really good job explaining things in the book which made it really good book to read.

  3. I am reading I Am Malala. One of the first images I can picture from reading this book is Malala standing up in front of a crowd speaking about education and the passion she has about it. Throughout the book Malala does many interviews, and speaks to many crowds. Another vivid image that I can picture from my book is the Swat Valley, where Malala and her family live. In the book, she talks about how beautiful her valley is and the nature she is surrounded by, like the "lush green hills." I imagine, before the Taliban came through, that it is a very peaceful valley, I would like to see what it actually looked like. The last thing I can imagine is the Taliban taking over Swat Valley. I can imagine the once peaceful Swat valley now being filled with terror and fear. I can imagine the shops and schools being closed, and armed men patrolling the streets. I can also imagine the quietness that all the families felt after kids use to play in the streets on the daily. All these images are so vivid because Malala explains it so well throughout the book, and makes it easier for me to comprehend the difference scenes in the book.

  5. In the book A Long Way Gone, I envision a forest with many men at war fighting each other. I also envision a shack that the men have taken over from the rebels. These images remind me of where they are fighting the war and where he stayed when he captured the abandoned rebels' house. The author made it easy to visualize this because he went into depth about what he described, about a deep forest and an old shack that they have taken over.

    1. I am reading "I Am Malala," and our books sound like they have some things similar. In my book the Taliban are taking over Malala's town and I can envision the empty streets and how scared the people are. There is also a lot of fighting going on in my book and I can also envision how scary and how much war is going on. Is your main character living in an old shack in the middle of the forest? Or is that where the fighting is happening?

  6. I see a lot of different things in my book. I see all them in the car on their road trip, and Amire getting car sick and not feeling well. I also see baba graduating and driving around on his free time looking at rich and poor houses. these images are vivid, because as i was reading i would just picture what was going on and comparing myself to Amire getting car sick, because that happens to me sometimes as well. the author describes the characters good in the book.

    1. How come they were going looking around at rich and poor houses? Is your main character wealthy or poor? I can't relate to your book when they just go driving around because in my story the Taliban is taking over and patrolling the streets and people are even too scared to go out of their houses. I can imagine my book is different to yours, but both sound pretty interesting and vivid with images. I can also imagine when your character is getting car sick, because I always get car sick on long rides as well.

  7. I can picture a lot of different moments from the book Night. Elie does an okay job at explaining what is happening, a lot of the times the book is moving very fast that it can be hard to keep up but when Elie describes the Jewish people being loaded in the train carts I can picture how it was because he describes how little space and food they have. When Elie talked about his infected foot I can picture how gross it looked. When the guards abuse the Jewish men I also picture how hurt they would get because they are extremely unhealthy. These always seem to stay in my mind because it is a very cruel thing that happened.

  9. in the book along way gone the author describes a lot of scenes some different some pretty similar throughout the book the common theme i see is war, so he always describes a village in a good way and a bad way most of the time he describes that the village is, trashed, bloody, and crumbling, most of the villages Ishmaels visits have been looted and ransacked so there usually destroyed. another scene he describes is multiple forest, he describes how the trees gives them shade and provides protection and cover from people and the elements. another common theme is just gore and death in general throughout the entire book Ishmael describes the death and the gore and blood that is seen everywhere. and that is just crazy on how much bad stuff he has seen.

  10. The book I'm reading is Malala. The author does a great job describing scenes making it very simple for the readers to picture what's going on. One scene that I picture is the time Malala got shot. The author did a great job describing how she was on the back of the bus and how her mind went blur and her friends sat there in shock while she laid on their lap. Another scene I can defiantly picture is when she was worried about intruders so she tiptoed out and locked the fence and locked the door and shut all of the blinds to keep anyone away from her family. And it defiantly helps out understanding the scenes with the pictures the author provided.

  12. In the book Night, Elie does a good job at showing his readers imagery of what he seen and went through. Towards the beginning of the book he describes a scene of them throwing little children and infants against a fence and shooting and killing them. That is something I will never forget it is awful what they had to see and go through at that time. Another part I remember very clearly was when Elie's dad was so weak he couldn't move or walk. When the bread was given to him the other older jews at the camp would jump him and beat him stealing his bread. Seeing how people just turned on each other so quickly when they are in similar situations baffles me.
