Blog Response #6
In all five novels, the main character or characters face adversity in one way or another. Describe how you view the character's challenges in your book, and talk about how your character handles the hardships and struggles. If you were in your main character/characters situation, how would you handle yourself? What would you do?
In I Am Malala, Malala is a girl living in Pakistan and her being born a girl was bad enough in her culture. When she was born people told her parents that they should hide her and be ashamed. Once she was older men in the Taliban tried to take away every rout she had to an education, first by trying to say there were things wrong with the school, then trying there hardest to get the teachers to quit, then threatening to destroy the school. If i was Malala i would have given up she has a passion for education and she wasn't to do what she thought was best even when her life was being threated by normal people and the Taliban, I would have not been able to be in her shoes.
ReplyDeleteThat would take a lot of courage to do what Malala did, I don't think I would be able to do what she did either. It is strange to think that kids weren't given a right to get an education.
Deleteif feel like what Malala did was amazing and she had a difficult life growing up. why did people want to hide her when she was born?
DeleteI think Malala had a good understanding of what and how to handle everything.
DeleteI am reading night and I believe that Elie has completely no control in his situation. with the fear of death lingering around everyday Jews were not going to step out of line in even the slightest for they knew the consequences have had seeing it be done to fellow Jews. Elie handles this situation by trying to get advice from veterans of the camp to help him improve his chances of . if I was in Else shoes I would do the same thing he is doing and just trying to play the long game and make sure I stay heathy to play the long game.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it is smart of Elie to take advice from the veterans of the camps because that probably increased his survival chance by a lot.
Deletei believe the veterans and his dad have heelped through alot and helped him not just give up and they have motivated him to keep fighting becuase they are strong and see the end is near.
DeleteI am reading I Am Malala and she is bring threatened by the Taliban just how Elie is being threatened in my book Malala go to her father for guidance.
DeleteElie goes through a lot, such as physical and mental abuse. I wonder a lot how the German guards could treat humans this way and not feel guilt. The Jewish people were starved, overworked, beat, without basic necessities, taken from family, and killed for no reason. I couldn't imagine living like that everyday not knowing if any second you would be hit or shot. I understand why Elie and his father became so doubtful. Everything kept getting worse and it probably seemed like it was never going to end. To survive Elie became numb in a way, like when he caught the guard with the young polish girl Elie was whipped 25 times, he said after the first it didn't really bother him. I don't think I would have been able to live like that being by myself facing these challenges.
ReplyDeletei also wonder how the germans cared so little about everyone else i dont think they would of wanted to be in the camps and conditions the jews are in.
DeleteI agree he was put under some pretty extreme punishments that he had to overcome.
DeleteThis is awful that the guards could treat people like that. Those punishments are awful and nobody should ever have to be put through that. I feel so bad that he had to be put through that.
DeleteI also wondered how the German soldiers did that to the Jewish people and he was put into situations where I do not think I could survive.
DeleteI feel like the Germen soldiers regret their actions against the prisoners, especially with how many innocent lives they took.
Deletei think most of the Germans knew it was wrong but they didn't know what would happen if they didn't follow the commands
Deletei am reading night and the way elie is dealing with his struggles is by having his father to talk to and they give eachother ideas on how to stay positive and stay strong i think they are handling everything pretty well for what there are dealing with. if i where in the same situation i would probably have a hard time if i knew death was the way out it would make it hard for me to want to keep going for no benifit i would probably talk to my dad alot to if he was there with me.
ReplyDeleteat least he has someone there for him so he's not totally alone while going though those horrors
DeleteI agree, always thinking that your on deaths door would defiantlyf make it harder to try and survive.
Deletei also think that knowing you could die at anytime would make it hard to keep going
Deletein my book my characters father also helps her stay positve and is a good role model as well
DeleteIn the book Night, Elie is brought into a Nazi concentration camp and is forced to do hard labor in very bad conditions with little food to eat. He tries to help his father and get him through the camp, but his father is older and gets weaker as the book goes on. Elie handles these conditions in the best way he can. He sticks with his father and works as hard as he can. If I were in Elie's situation I do not think I could handle it. It seemed extremely hard and I do not think I would have the motivation to continue living is such a way.
ReplyDeleteI agree Elie does have a lot of motivation to continue on considering the conditions he is under.
DeleteThat sounds terrible to go through that kind of concentration camp. It also sucks that his father is getting weaker. My book is the opposite of yours as my main characters father helps her and always tells her to speak out and to not be afraid of the Taliban that is attacking them. I don't think I would be able too handle your characters situation either. Do you think if your character had some support that it would make his life in the concentration camp easier?
Deletei dont think most anyone could stay motivated in those camps. its hard to believe humanity can be so cruel
DeleteThat sounds terrifying to go through. She seems like a very strong person and handles the situation well. I would also leave my home, but do you think you would try and speak out still?
ReplyDeletei am reading along way gone and throughout the book the main character Ishmael deals with alot of stuff. first he gets pushed out of his home because of the war and he loses his family. hes has to try to survive by running away from the chaos but it never really pauses so he has to deal with constant fear. Ishmael also has to survive while being thirsty and starving. he doesn't just deal with physical pain he also has to deal with mental stuff because throughout the book he has seen a lot of bad stuff like death, gore and everything else. i dont know how he is dealing with it i dont think i would, its all just so crazy to think about. i probably wouldn't have made it as long as he is.

DeleteYour book seems to be alot like the book i am reading which is night and the main characters seem to be going through many of the same struggles.
DeleteElie from night goes through struggles as he is a Jew who was captured by the Nazi and had to be moved into a ghetto. Elie struggles with seeing the faces of people as they pass looking so somber and defeated. With trying to cope with these struggles he talks with his father to try and help with his struggles. He as a Jew is being put through lots of psychical and mental abuse and punishment as well as not getting adequate treatment. If i were the main character i don't think that i would be able to take that abuse i would be one to feel done and probably would have never survived the camps and ghettos. I think Elie has a lot of determination with everything that had happened to him.
ReplyDeletei am reading a long way gone and something that is similer is that both our characters had to leave there homes behind and have to try to survive
DeleteBeing captured and not being able to live your life sounds terrible. I can relate to your book when you say your main characters talks to his father to try and cope with his struggles. My main characters, Malala, also talks to her father as they have the same beliefs, and a great relationship. I don't think I would be able to survive the camps and ghettos that you mentioned either. Your main character and mine both have lots of determination. Do you think that Elie will get his life back to normal eventually?
DeleteElie does have a lot of motivation for what he is being put through. It is so confusing how a human could treat another human this way.
Deletei am reading thousand splended sons. your carecter is in common with my carecter laylas mom she stays in her room hiding all the time.
DeleteI don't think I could be in his shoes and same thing with Malala they are both discovering things they shouldn't at that age and just them telling us what happened I can't believe that it actually happened to them.
Deletei am reading a thousand splendid suns. There are 2 main charters in my book Laila and Mariam. so far in my book i read about Mariam. She had a lot of problems that had happened in her life like how here mother hanged her self and how her dads wives made her marry a guy she didn't want to marry and how she had to wear a dress that covered her face for her husband religion and hos had to kill her husband to protect Laila. then you have Laila a 14 year old girl that gets bulled at school by a guy that spray piss at her from a water gun. but at least Laila has her friend Tariq that is always by her side.
ReplyDeletei am reading a long way gone and my book relates to yours in a way because both of our main characters has other people to try to help them and be on there side
Deleteyou have to be strong to go thought something like that. if you were in Malala shoes would you stay and deal with that or leave?
ReplyDeleteI am reading Night, The main character Elie is treated terrible he is worked very long and hard. He is in the same Barrack as his father. His Father is very weak and old so Elie does the best he can to help but when he gets beat, Elie knows better than to interfere. Elie has had to witness some pretty gruesome scenes of people getting killed but he cant do anything about it. he just keeps his head low to stay out of danger and make sure he gets the food he needs to stay alive. I could not imagine being in his shoes but if I were I would probably behave the same as Elie does.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds terrible to go through. My book is different from yours because the main characters dad trys to help better his kids life where yours is not able to. I haven't read the book but from your response I think I would also keep my head low and just try to survive.
Deletethe struggles that elie has to go though just to get through one day sound very hard. elie's day to day seems like hell and i think it is very kind to help out his dad who is struggling to live right now. And I agree with you that you should do the same thing he dose because you have to do what it takes to survive and that if you stand out to much you might be killed for it.
DeleteFor my book, A Thousand Splendid Suns, the main character, Mariam faces a lot of problems in her life and she faces them because of her husband Rasheed. They where in an enraged marriage. Jili is one of the wealthiest man in the cityite and has 5 wives and 9 children. Mariam faces her hardship and struggles by enduring immense suffering with quiet resilience, finding strength in her deep seated sense of morality and self-worth, often relying on her faith and the Quranic verses she memorized as a child, ultimately sacrificing herself to protect the well-being of others, particularly Laila, the woman she comes to consider her daughter
ReplyDeletei agree mariam is strugling with a lot of problems
DeleteI'm reading the kite runner and the main character also has alot of problems hes struggling with mently beocuse of his dad and the stuff he has seen
DeleteI am reading I am Malala. In the book Malala is the main character and she goes through lots of hardships. She has to chose to stick up for herself or to follow what everyone else is doing. She is faced with the Taliban banning girls from getting education and having to decide what she wants to do about it. She is very strong and decides to talk to others about what she thinks is right. If I was in her situation I don't think I would be as brave as she was to stick up for myself. If I decided to stay in Swat Valley I would be to scared to do anything so I think I would leave like I was told too.
ReplyDeleteagreed i think rather than sticking up for myself i would keep queit, i feel i would be safer doing that
DeleteIf i was Malala i would also leave i wouldn't want to stay in a place of constant fear
Deletei am reading thousand splendid sons. the main character mariam has a lot of problems. her parents forst her to get marred. she had a kid and it died and got depresed. her husband hates her. he made her chew on rockes and she broke a tooth. then she kills Rashed to save layla. she treats layla like her daughter.
ReplyDeletein a thousand splendid suns Mariam is married off and denied an education just because she is a woman. she decides to stick up for herself even if it can get her into trouble. if i was in her situation i would try and leave the country or die trying.
ReplyDeletei am reading "i am malala" and she is the main character in my book, something she is struggling with is womens rights, not just her but every girl, not only that but the taliban is also out to get her, if i were in her shoes i honestly wouldnt know what to do i would most likley live my whole life in fear and try to stay hidden.
ReplyDeleteHas she always struggled with women's rights? And how can she help herself? I agree if i was in her shoes i wouldn't know what to do as well.
Deletei am reading long way gone and it is very difrent becouse the everyone got education but they were not singled out they just had to survive from being killed by the rebles and if if i were in malala i would not know what to do becouse i would want to be educated but at the same time i would be scared to say somthing
Deletei agree that she sounds brave for not leaving her home even though it wasn't safe
ReplyDeleteI'm reading The Kite runner i would said say Hassan is strugling with probloms beocse he was assalted befor he was a happy kid he played with amire. he would stand up for amire thinking he would do the same for him. now hes really quite and i think hes fighting probloms on the inside becouse he didnt tell anyone
ReplyDeleteI am also reading The Kite Runner, i said the same thing he struggled with being sexual abused and i also agree that he's fighting problem's inside he doesn't want to talk about with others.
Deletein night Elie gets sent to a concentration camp and they were pushed out of their home and put on cattle cars. he also got split away from his dad in the camp he was worried about him getting killed because he was getting weak so he checked on his dad after every selection. And Elie foot swelled up in the winter from not having shoes so he needed surgery but he had left the infirmary early because he thought they would kill him because they were being liberated. if i was in his situation i would do the same he did by staying with his dad and trying to look the best and not be killed
ReplyDeleteim reading a long way gone and this is compleatly difrent than my book because in my book the rebles did not want to kill a town becouse they would you them as sheilds if the army came around
DeleteI am reading The Kite Runner, Hassan was sexually assaulted and how he has quite and very shy before. before he was a happy kid and now he's just dealing with stuff mentally and doesn't like to be around anyone. If i was in his position, i would get help from someone and try and cope it myself, or at least have someone to talk to.
ReplyDeletei think if hassan told someone what happen he could get help and wouldn't be struggling so bad mentally with what happen
DeleteHas Hassan always been getting assaulted? or only the one time that ruined his life. i think he just needs some help that he doesn't want to get.
Deletei agree, I feel like if Hassan tried talking to someone he would still be happy
DeleteI am reading a long way gone and the main character has faced adversity buy getting in pinches with rebels and being almost killed multiple times while losing countless friends and family members. and he has kind of just took it on the chin and just kept moving. I feel if i was in his shoes i do not believe i could handle the stress and the fact that i lost all famly would devistate me. and i would try to fight fight back
ReplyDeleteI believe if i was in his situation i would be lost except just trying to survive.
DeleteSounds a little like the book Night how the main character fight to get by and is losing a lot if his peers.
DeleteIn A Long Way Gone the main character Ishmael faces numerous adversity's such as when he lost his family and home due to the civil war. this left him completely lost and he struggled to find a sense of belonging and prepose for himself. He made it thru a war torn country he comes across hunger ,fear, and the constant threat through the forest and villages. If i was in his shews i would not have a clew on what to do i think i would just keep trying to survive and help the others fight.
ReplyDeleteThis kinda sounds like the book night where he loses everything he has and fights hunger and fear
Deletei am reading night and the way elie is deals with his struggles is by talking to his father. i believe that the only reason he has not given up is because he is with his father. if i where in the same situation i would have a very hard time watching others get beat and not being able to do anything about it.
ReplyDeleteYes i am in the same i would be terrified of getting shot and beat by the soilders.
DeleteIn the book The Kite Runner Amir is the main character and his dad is a really famous and rich man. when he was born his mom died giving birth. So, Amir's dad does not try bonding with him. Amir also isn't athletic or can fight for himself so Baba (Amir's dad) doesn't like him for that. The way Amir handles is dads feeling about him is he tries to do things that would impress Baba. Amir can write amazing stories and is super good in school. And when the annual Kite race fight was happening in town Amir was going to try to win the fight. Because that was the only thing that would impress baba. If I was in Amir's spot I think i would try talking to Baba. I would tell him how he is making me feel. and I would also try to be more athletic. I feel Amir could try doing a lot more then just doing the things that impress Baba.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Night Elise faces many struggles in his life and what gets him through them is his Dad if he didn't have his Dad with him i feel like the story would change. Elise went through many challenges like getting beat up and getting transported in cattle cars like a herd of cattle. They never had food or water and got treated terrible i feel if i was in Elise shoes i would not beable to survive.
ReplyDeleteI can relate with my book. My character goes to her dad when she is struggling which he always helps solve the problem.
DeleteI agree in the story that Elie gets beaten alot more then the other prisoners
DeleteMy character Malala faces the struggle to have fair women's rights in her community. Her community doesn't believe in women having the right to go to school which really bothers her. So her dad is a teacher at a school and he teaches Malala. Eventually her dad accomplishes getting a school filled with boys and girls. Malala reads a lot when she is struggling and I think it helps clear her mid of all the horrific activity going on. If I were her, I would do the same thing. I would try to get as much education as possible to keep up with everyone else.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds horrible dose she get picked on at her new school or do the boys leave her alone and do they let her read?
DeleteI am reading Night and i think that the struggles that Elie is facing is that she is worried that her father wont make it out and she is more worried about him living then she is about herself living. Her challenges are also that she cares about what happens to the people there and you cant because if you care about others and not just yourself that will get you killed. The last main problem is the lack of resources that they have the will not be able to survive on moreless work with them.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like the conditions are so harsh that Elie should be foucsing on keeping herself alive.
DeleteI agree with what you said about ho she is brave. I think she really controls her own life and does what she is capable of doing instead of relying on other people to help her.
ReplyDeleteI am reading A long way gone Ishmael lost lost his family and he doesn't know if they are dead or alive and one by by one he loses his friends and everyone he has gotten close to the war does not stop in the book so Ishmael is always on the run and every time he settles down the rebels attack again. it would be tough for me and i definitely wouldn't be able to last as long as he has.
ReplyDeletethis sounds bad that he dosnt know whether or not his family is alive or dead and he loses his friends one by one i couldn't imagine what he is going through. i cant believe that everywhere he goes the rebels find and attack him. i agree with you that it would be tough to live though but if i were him i would try to run out of the country and not be there anymore.
DeleteI'm reading Night and I think that Elie wouldn't be able to handle the problems in his life without his dad. I would have a hard time being able to handle being abused and treated like an animal, so I would just keep moving forward.
ReplyDeleteI agree it would be hard to go through being treated like an animal like the jews in the holocaust
DeleteI am reading the book Night, The main character Elie is not treated very good but still gets treated better then other jews in his work camp. Elie and his father are in the same work came and got to stay together the whole time. Elie's father is old and has a hard time doing all the hard work so he gets beat a lot and punished. Elie has watched some of the other prisoners get beat very badly and hung even. Elie knows to keep to work and not to get in trouble and stay out of the guards way. If i was the main character i would do the same as Elie and stay out off trouble and would just do what I am told.
ReplyDeleteis elie a kid? why is she or he treated differently??
DeleteThis book seems really interesting, it almost relates to my book of Ishmael doing what he is told so he can also stay alive. This book seems interesting, so hope you like it.
Deletewhat did physcological tricks did elie have to do to survive the concentration camp?
Deletei am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns in this book there are different main characters one named Marium and one named Laila. they both face adversity in the book like how Marium's mom hung herself at the beginning of the book and how she was forced to marry a man named Rasheed. but the other main character Laila faces adversity when the infighting begins for control of the country during this time Laila's house gets blown up her parents die and her "boyfriend" Tariq gets blown up while fleeing the country. if i was any of these people i would do my best to leave the country to leave everything behind and start a new life.
ReplyDeletei would flee the country as well. horrible culture
DeleteVery rough start to a book, but does seem really interesting. The storyline seems like a lot of people die, the same relation to my book about Ishmael in the war killing people to keep himself alive. Hopefully you still enjoy your book like i do!
DeleteIm reading a thousand splendid suns. and the one character, Marium seems to be uncomfortable about forceful marriages throughout the book and overall the culture she and her family have. i would have left the country because no one wants to marry at 15
ReplyDeletewhat else about the book do you find as other reasons on why you would leave the country
DeleteIn a long way gone, Ishmael faces adversity in multiple ways. First, he goes through the physical emotions and physical abuse of his body during the war. Ishmael also faces a side of psychological adversity, with his nightmares, flashbacks, and emotional detachment from the war. I believe he faces his challenges by staying calm and doing what he should, instead of getting stressed out and not doing anything. If I were Ishmael, I would do the same thing, stay calm, and just keep doing what I am supposed to do.
ReplyDeleteI agree that he seems to always be stressed and that he should just be foucsing on whats next
Deletei am reading a thousand splendid suns, one of the two main protagonists Mariam faces adversity I'm several different ways, unfamiliar to western culture. after Mariams mother passes she moves in with her negligent father Jalil and when she turned 15 Jalil forced Mariam to marry a 45 year old man Rasheed, Rasheed abuses Mariam. Mariam had miscarriages that Rasheed beat her for because she couldn't bless him with a son.
ReplyDeleteif i where Mariam i would try to find an escape, either find a different city or leave the country entirely
I am Reading i am malala, in this book malala is faced with many stuggles, she lives in pakistan, which is pakistan girls are seen that they should just have children and cook for there family, but malala wants to go to school and advocates for other girls to be allowed to, the talibian however thought women did not need schooling and were mad at malala for continuing school, eventually malala was shot by members of the talibian, but she survived, i dont think i could have been as strong and reliant as malala was.
ReplyDeleteI am reading A Long Way Gone, in this book Ishmael is challenged with keeping himself alive. All of his family is unfindable so there is nobody to take care of him. He finds multiple ways to stay alive on his own, he either groups up with a group of young boys in the same spot that he's in, or he figures out how live off the land (for a short time). This isn't his only problem though, he also endures lots of physical and mental pain. physical from the times he was captured by the rebels and mental by thinking about his lost family. If I were in ishmael's spot I would also group up with boys to make surviving easier.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Night, and i think if i was in this situation i would do the same as the main character. i would try to stick with my father or someone i knew. I honestly dont know how i would react in this situation because its nothing you can prepare for. you could die at any moment.
ReplyDeleteI can agree with you I dont think their would be much of way to prepare yourself for something like the holocaust.
DeleteI am reading a long way gone. In my book Ishmael has to face a lot of challenges. He cannot find anyone in his family and is struggling to find food and water. The way he is able to get by is finding boys he used to go to school with and grouping up with them. If I was ever in the same situation as Ishmael I would stick with a group of two maybe three and try to make my way to safety with them.
ReplyDeleteI am reading "I am Malala" and Malala does face some pretty hard things to face as a young adult. Malala believed that women should be able to go to school and get the same education as the men do but the Taliban didn't. Malala ended up getting shot by the Taliban but that didn't stop her from fighting. I don't think I would be able to be like Malala and go through everything she has.
ReplyDeletewould you still speak out even with the Taliban threating you?
Deletei am reading thousand splendid suns. in my book Mariam has to face her mom being grouchy and her dad being rich and being to nice so she has a mixed family, and she struggles on who to believe when they tell Stories about things because their stories are polar opposites. Mariam had chosen her dad over her mom and her mom hangs herself in front of her and she is traumatized by that. if i was in that situation i would just go live with a friend so i didn't have to deal with that stress.
ReplyDelete
