Blog Response #3

Stotan!, Chinese Handcuffs, Running Loose, and Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes  all involve intense topics that add to the plot.  Talk about the point in which you became hooked into your book.  What did Chris Crutcher do to hook you? Describe any moment or moments in the book where you didn't want to put the book down.  What will you always remember about this book?

  1. im reading running loose. in the book there was some intense parts like when becky talks about how her mom mentaly abused her and her mom and dad got divorced. then later after ward becky dies her dad had no one to talk to exept louie. the part that hooked me was the part when becky and louie went out hikeing out in the woods becous i had no idea what was going to happen. I will always remember this book becouse it relates to me persaly way more than id like it to from haveing a freind pass away in a accident to haveing to talk to there father that has no one any more no children, no wife, and no one to lean back on. I like the book but it felt like my life in words.

    1. I also was very interested in the part when they went hiking. I think it was probably the best climax in a book that I've read in along time. From that point on, I think the author did a good job throwing in some ups and downs that people can experience in life.

    3. The book Im reading stotan also has a lot of losses. There friend is sick and dieing and almost all the characters have lost a parent.

  2. I'm reading Chinese Handcuffs. I became hooked when they talked about Preston killing himself when he found out Stacy was pregnant, because I'm guessing he wasn't really to be a dad, or some other reason behind that. I didn't want to put the book down, when Dillon was writing Preston notes, and I wanted to learn more about what Dillon had to say to Pres, so i kept reading on to figure out what he wanted to say to him. I will always remember the reality about sexual abuse, and how suicide can effect others too.

    1. Your book sounds like it has a lot going on to it. I can kind of relate my book to it, because one of the characters in my book, Jody, got pregnant and had an abortion because her boyfriend told her too. Her boyfriend then went and tried to kill himself because he felt like all the heat was on him. Suicide can really affect anyone, and I think both of our books show that very well. Do you think that some people would be offended by your book or shouldn't read your book because of the topics that are involved in it? What were the notes saying that Dillon was writing to Preston? Your book sounds like it would be a good one to read.

    2. are books are kind of similar in my book stotan there a character Nortie and his brother killed him self when he was young and it kind of talks about how that affects Nortie even now when he's a teenager.

    3. i agree with you on the part where Preston killed him self i couldn't stop reading. it surprised me that Stacy's baby was Preston's.

  3. The book I'm reading is Running Loose. The moment that I became hooked is when Louie made the big deal about football and quit. I became hooked at the fact that the school is going against him and everyone thinks he's the problem. I didn't want to put the book down when Louie and Becky went off on their adventure to the cabin. I liked this part because you never knew what was going to happen. One takeaway that I'll remember about this book is no matter what's going on in your life, there's always something out there to better it.

    1. This book sounds interesting. Do you feel like you can relate to any of the book since you played football this year? I agree with you when you say that no matter what is going on in your life that there is always something better ahead. It sounds like Louie is going through a lot at school, why does everyone think he is the problem? Do you think he is the problem or someone else. My book can kind of relate to this as the main character in my book always thinks that everyone thinks she is ugly because her face is scarred.

    2. It sounds like you really like this book. The two going off in the cabin would definitely get me hooked on it as well. And there is always something more out there.

    3. i think that was interesting but i also confused a little bit until i read on. i think that is a good part to remember but do you think Louie did the right thing and telling his coach of ? i think he did.

    4. I can connect with you that the part where the book hooked us was when louie quit the team because Washington got hurt. And i think that your takeaway from the book is a really good one as well. because even if louie was having a bad day there were people around him that supported what was going on and it made it a little better.

    5. I the part where they went to the woods also had me really wanting to read made me stay reading until i figured out what happened the author does a good job to always make you keep reading.

    6. I agree them were both significant parts in the book. The deep connection they made in the cabin was very pure and full of love and romance. It was refreshing to see something going good in Louie's life. Do you agree with the punishment he got from Coach Ledecky set in place?

  4. I am reading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. The point of the book that got me hooked was when I found out that Sarah's dad burned her instead of a pot of spaghetti falling on her. After they mentioned this in the book, the book got way more interesting. Another moment where I didn't want to put my book down is when Sarah ran away from the hospital to escape her dad getting crazy again. The last couple chapters in the book were very interesting. I think that another crazy part was when Virgil chased Eric down and hurt him which was another super good scene. Something I will always remember about this book is the courage that Sarah had, and how she never stopped believing that she would one day get away from her dad. I think that the ending was also very good, and Virgil got what he deserved in the end for making Sarah suffer through all those years in her life.

    1. In my book Running Loose, Louie (Main Character) also has some crazy times in his life. He worked hard all summer to play football and then quits it because his coach is crazy. Gets told he can no longer participate with any athletic programs that his school offers. And he had a good girlfriend that he cared most about and then something bad happens to her. But through it all he, he also had courage to keep fighting through it just like Sarah in your book.

  5. I am reading Stotan, and the part that got me hooked was when Norite was getting beat up by his father and Walker, Lion and Jeff all came to save him and his mother from his abusive father and Norite now lives with Walker so he can be safe, and while Norite is living with Walker, his mother is living with a friend so she can also be safe from her husband. This part got me more into the book because no matter how bad the beating is, the person who is doing it to you is still family, and when you are a kid theres nothing you can really do about it.

    2. i can agree that norite's parts of the book is the most interesting bits. its surprising that norite's story being the most interesting bit is such a common sentiment. maybe he is akin to the penguins in the Madagascar movies, where he is the most interesting bit, but if the story was all about him rather than just the sparce seasoning he is now, it would overall be worse

    3. i feel the same way. nortie and Jeff seemed to be the only really interesting characters in the book. no one else really had a background story.

  8. With reading Stotan! I thought the book was interesting but i didn't really get hooked until chapter 8 where Chris Crutcher really started showing how close the team is and how mush they care for each other. 9. In Running Loose i got hooked when Louie quit football it was because he was making a big deal about the coach playing dirty and that nobody would believe that he told them to make a dirty hit. he hooked me by adding in the details on how the play was planned out. the part that i didn't want to put the book down was when him and Becky went to the cabin because you never knew what would happen when they are out alone hiking to the cabin. i will always remember the part where Becky swerved to miss the kids and crashed because Louie had to learn how to deal with loosing someone he loves.

  10. the main part that got me hooked in chinese handcuffs was when i found out one of the main characters (preston) shot himself in front of his brother dilon, another part was finding out jen gets sexually abused, both of these are very intense and i think it shows the reality of life and how not everything is always sunshine and rainbows

    1. I agree with the handcuff part when he shot himself Infront of his brother, and the abused part is where I couldn't put my book down, because i wanted to know where she was going with it. 12. I am reading Running Loose the part that got me hooked on the book was when coach Ledeckey ordered for a kid on the Opposing team named Washington to be injured so he couldn't play anymore. This got me hooked because i was curious on if Washington would get hurt but also what would happen after like if the main character Louie would quit football or not because of it. A part of the book when i couldn't put it down was when Beckey died in a car crash i couldn't put it down because i wanted to see what would happen next like what would Louie's reaction be to this event. something i will never forget about this book is how louie will never back down on what he dose even if others dont agree with what it was.

  21. I am reading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, and one of the most intense topics is the abuse Sarah has received from her dad. Sarah went to extremes to escape him. She pretended to be sick so she could be in the hospital instead of at home wit him. Then she ran off to find her mom. The suspense makes it interesting and hard to put the book down. Chris Crutcher hooked me at this part by not just coming out and saying that Ryan was Preston's baby but he made Dillion recognize Ryan in his own baby picture. He also remembered that, before Preston killed himself, Preston said that he left something else behind too. hinting at the fact that he had got Stacy pregnant. 28. I am reading the book Stotan. The point where I got hooked was when they all went over to Lions house for stotan week. This is probally because you learn so much about all four of the main characters when they hang out at Lions and tell "stotan stories" to eachother. After that point I felt like I related to the book better and Chris Crutcher kept adding more and more drama that just made me want to keep picking up the book. A part where I couldn't put the book down was where Nortie got drugged and almost died, I think this is because most of the drama in the book circulates around Nortie and he's my favorite character because I feel bad for him. I will never forget this book because of the deep topics it deals with such as abuse, racism, and torn apart families due to alcohol/drugs. Also because this book is proof you can prevail through tough times like those and mantain great friendships.

This was the first point of conflict in the book, aside from Louie and Boomer. Also, his getting kicked off the football team opened up the plot to go in any direction. the author created a perfect conflict in the book that completely threw the plot off because in the beginning all he was talking about was football and now he can't play any more football.

  33. I'm reading running loose. Throughout the book many intense situations happen which could affect Louie and the people in his life, like when he stood up to the principal and coach after they made a ridiculous offer to put him on the team again. I think it's situations like these that really keep me interested in the story, and what keeps me wanting to read more.

  34. i am reading Stotan. The part that hooked me on was when they went to Norties house to collect his stuff but his dad wouldn't let them and held them at gunpoint. Chris Cruther did a good job of portraying the emotions in that scene to the point it felt like you were there with them. And I will always remember that Norties dad was abusive towards him and his mom. This book has gotten very interesting and i want to keep reading more.

  35. I am reading Staying Fat For Sarah Brynes. The part that hooked me what when we found out it wasn't a pot of boiling spaghetti water it was actually her dad held a piece of burning wood. This hooked me because i couldn't stop reading i wanted to find out what would happen next.

  36. I am reading Running loose, throughout this book there were many moments that hooked me one was when Louie and coach Madison had to sit Infront of the principle and try to be able to get louie to be able to run track. coach Madison made so many exceptions and finally they agreed to allow him to run the 2 mile. This was a tense moment because i didn't really know what the outcome would be of this conversation so I wanted to keep reading.

  37. I am reading running loose, There has been some pretty intense parts in this book. The first thing that originally hooked me was the football scene when Louie stood up for what he believed in resulting in him getting kicked off the team by his actions on the football field. This hooked me because i would react the same way and i do not agree with how coach Ledecky handled the situation i thought it was very ignorant and immature of an adult to act like that.

  38. I am reading Stotan and I think the chapter that got me hooked into the book was 8. It was starting out really slow then they found out that Nortie took drugs, and he ended up going to the hospital and his dad is abusive so his friends went over to his house to grab all Norties things to move him out of the house so then he could be safe and not get his mom hurt to. Well while they were grabbing his stuff Norties dad pulled a gun on them and so they left and went around the block because they told his mom to pack his stuff and her stuff since he left and they will take her somewhere safe.
